Metabolism is your bodies process for handling calories. They can be burned (providing energy) or stored (in the form of fat). This happens 24 hours a day – while working out, watching TV, and even while sleeping!

Your metabolism adjusts as needed. If you eat fewer calories, your metabolism slows down. This is why, when you diet, you have trouble maintaining weight once you stop the diet. A slower metabolism after the diet means you still must eat less or risk gaining weight. Slowing down your metabolism is not a good idea. For long lasting weight loss, you need to find ways to speed up metabolism.

The best way to avoid this slow down in your metabolism is through only losing one to two pounds per week. This will increase your ability to keep off the weight once you are off the diet. It is all about eating the right foods, so you can lose weight, but eat MORE.

Food is only one of the ways to speed up metabolism. It’s certainly not the only thing that triggers your metabolism. Exercise works, too. When you exercise it tells your body that it needs more energy and so your metabolism is kicked into high gear. Plus, exercise lets you tone up and build muscles. Muscle requires more energy and burns more calories, so that also ups your metabolism. Your metabolism is burning calories all the time to fuel your muscles, even when they are not being used.

Take heart, you won’t need to do tons of exercising for the rest of your life! The more you are able to tone your body, the higher your metabolism. Eventually you will reach a stage where you will not need much in the way of exercise to maintain your new svelte look.

Most diets are not effective. They count on that first few pounds everyone loses in the initial days. That makes everyone excited so they spread the word to all their friends. The diet company makes a fortune overnight then disappears. Why? Unfortunately, the weight you lost is usually just water loss that will come back immediately. But, by then the damage is done, you’ve slowed your metabolism and as soon as you start eating again, you gain it all back plus – on average – an additional 10 pounds.

Losing weight starts with ways to speed up metabolism. You have to speed it up through eating the right, healthy foods – and exercising. You want to lose weight without starving yourself. Starving yourself just leads to a slow metabolism and eventual failure.
