Things to Check Before Buying a Used Treadmill
When it comes to shopping for a cheap used treadmill, there are some basic factors worth considering. The best way to inspect a treadmill is by checking the major parts first and working down. The most important part of any treadmill is the motor and it should be your first focus. In additional to the mechanical parts there are features and accessories to consider just the same way you would if you were buying a new treadmill.
There is a difference between used treadmills and refurbished treadmills. A used treadmill was actually used while a refurbished product was returned because of a manufacturer defect. Once the defect is fixed the product can no longer sell for retail so it is marked down considerably. It is almost like buying a new treadmill at the price of a used one.
A used treadmill will typically show signs of wear especially at and around the major parts. The first thing to check is the motor. This is the heart of the treadmill and a bad motor will be nothing short of endless problems for the duration you own the machine. Be sure to ask about warranty coverage because you will want something to insure the parts in case anything breaks down.
To check the motor turn on the treadmill and listen carefully to noise it generates. There should not be any knocking or excessive vibration. Go as far as giving it a trial run and notice if the motor isn’t running smoothly. Ask a lot of questions about anything that doesn’t feel right.
Then there is the console that must be checked for accuracy. Check the date and time and if possible try to notice if the counter is accurate. It is also useless if it cannot read vitals accurately. Some treadmills come with preprogrammed work outs so that might be something to look for in a treadmill used or new.
While you are on top of the treadmill, make sure the deck is wide enough to move freely and long enough to accommodate a sprinting stride. It is no fun to work out while feeling confined in mobility.
There are accessories such as a treadmill mat to go underneath the treadmill that may well be worth the investment. A used treadmill with preexisting wear will require the owner to be a little more diligent about taking care of it.
