Weight Loss Drugs – Are They Effective?

It would be easy to believe that the global weight problem was just consigned to the adult population but that would be a lie; in addition to these fears shown by health organizations, is the fact that obesity is affecting younger people. To cure this problem, some people have resorted to surgical measures whereas others have decided that adjustments to their food intake and an increase in physical activity are necessary. Of course if you are really in a hurry then you can always use weight loss medication to speed the process up.

The idea behind the drugs is to quicken each person’s metabolism enabling the weight to be lost much quicker. It was only after scientists discovered that these drugs had side effects and were related to heart valve disease that they were taken off the shelves. Not to be defeated though, manufacturers have introduced updated drugs, prescribed by doctors but the FDA approval process is slow.

The use of drugs that help weight reduction has become so commonplace that it is almost certain that you know of someone who has tried them. The idea that a simple drug can change your body shape without the need to change the diet or sacrificing those pleasures in life can be very tempting. The weight loss drug manufacturers have spent a huge sum on research but this cannot be compared to the amount spent by consumers.

Despite the advances in weight control pills there are still health problems, some of which people are sickness and diarrhea. The harmful side effects have not been eliminated and it is possible that you could still suffer from hallucinations, stroke, tremors and heart attacks. The side effects will depend on the person taking the medicine and can be related to their lifestyle; a consultation with the doctor first, rather than buying them over the counter, can help to reduce side effects; stopping using the drugs completely may not eradicate all the problems they may have caused. For instance it is not uncommon for people taking weight control pills to experience other side effects like sleep problems, tiredness, mood swings, stomach problems and more.

Although these weight loss drugs do work, an increase in beneficial effects occurs when regular exercise is undertaken along with a change in eating habits. A low calorie diet would consist of meals that contain vitamins, minerals and fiber which are all essential for good health; the best sources are fruit and vegetables.

Exercise can be done in whatever form suits the individual best but it should incorporate fat-burning exercises that will burn up any excess calories. Of course a good exercise regime will combine exercises that increase the heart rate and exercises that use weights to tone the muscles. A regime of this kind would increase an individual’s metabolic rate.
