The Truth About Rapid Muscle Growth…

by Don Demarco

The primary aim of any bodybuilding workout is to achieve rapid muscle growth.

Muscles begin to grow when the stress put on them by means of a workout is perceived as a threat to survival.

Only by training at a high intensity level will rapid muscle growth occur.

However, it is not always easy to engage in high intensity resistance training.

Dedicating a 100% to intensity is the key to adding mass to your frame and achieving rapid muscle growth.

This means that your body needs to be pushed to an extent where it is at or close to its maximum potential, during every training session.

Each set of exercise needs to be taken to concentric muscular failure or close to one or two reps of failure in order to achieve the maximum potential effort.

All exercises go through concentric and eccentric phases.

The phase of an exercise in which you lift, such as the pulling motion of a chin up, is the concentric or positive phase.

The eccentric phase or negative phase of an exercise is when you are lowering the tension on a muscle, similar to when you are lowering yourself in a chin-up.

Therefore, you can define concentric muscular failure as the inability to perform an additional repetition of the positive or lifting phase.

Each repetition gets tougher than the previous one as you continue to lift, when you are doing 5-7 reps.

You will eventually get to a point where you can’t push the bar anymore, though you are trying as hard as you can.

Completing the movement seems to become impossible, despite your greatest effort.

This technique pushes you to muscular failure and is one of the keys to rapid muscle growth.

There are some people who believe in not taking each repetition to muscular failure.

It is, however, essential for you to train close to this level of intensity, even if you do not train to failure.

You have to be within one or two repetitions of muscular failure to achieve this.

To achieve rapid muscle growth you have to reach at least this level of intensity.

It is important for you to gradually build your intensity to this level if you have just started weight training.

You must always utilize proper form while performing an exercise and avoid heavily stressing your joints and corrective tissues.

You can start stretching your limits after you have learned the proper form and your body has started to adjust to the training.

This requires discipline both mentally and physically.

You mind needs to deal with the discomfort that comes with training to failure, as you push your body to perform at a high intensity level to achieve rapid muscle growth.

Most people who train in the gym fail to transform their bodies to an appreciable degree due to a certain reason.

They do not perform their exercises to an intensity level at which they can tax their body’s existing resources.

These exercises can provide certain health benefits, but will not help in rapid muscle growth.

Your body will not produce rapid muscle growth unless it is presented with a task that challenges its existing resources causing it to engage its adaptive mechanism.

To summarize, you need to exercise your body at an intensity level high that is enough to utilize your body’s existing resources, forcing it to engage its adaptive mechanism; this will result in a positive change in your body and rapid muscle growth.

Don’t forget that intensity is the key to rapid muscle growth.

The Right Cardio For Muscle Gain…

by Don Demarco

What is the role of cardio in muscle building?

The answer you will get from any old time stalwart is that cardio is a waste of time.

But let me tell you that this is not true.

Cardio helps muscle building in two ways.

1) Muscle building cardio warm-up.

The best way to warm up before lifting weights is a five-minute light cardio session.

In addition to increasing your body’s core temperature, it also warms up your arms and legs so that they are ready to take on the onslaught of pumping iron without being prone to injury.

Running, spot jogging, using a stair climber or elliptical trainer, or cycling are some of the forms of cardio that you can do.

Your heart rate increases during a cardio session, resulting in adequate blood being pumped throughout your body, and this prepares your body for a weight training session.

2) Muscle building cardio for definition.

Cardio only plays a role during the warm up session of your exercise, and not otherwise, if your goal is only to increase strength and build muscle volume.

However, a combination of high intensity cardio and weight training is required if you want to get ripped muscles and six pack abs.

I’ve seen this so many times in gyms around the country.

People mostly head to the gym to get the ripped physique of their favorite movie star.

Then, after pumping iron for months, even though they get bigger and stronger, they find it difficult to get the definition that they’re looking for.

For well-defined muscles, you need to include muscle building cardio into your workout.

So would you choose muscle building cardio that comprises of a long, leisurely run through that park or 45-minutes on the treadmill every alternate day?

None of them.

If you are looking for serious definition, there is only one form of muscle building cardio that can get you those washboard abs and make you look ripped: high intensity, low interval cardio.

That’s correct; you don’t need to spend hours running on the treadmill.

For it to be truly effective, muscle building cardio needs to be very intense and short, just like weight training.

Now that we have spoken about the kind of cardio that needs to be done, let’s talk about how often and when.

A high intensity cardio soon after a weight training session can help to burn maximum fat, as shown by studies.

Not having to schedule time for exercises on your off days is another advantage of doing cardio just after your weight training session.

You can also maximize fat loss by adding some standalone muscle building cardio on your off days.

It is a good idea to start slow if you’ve previously never done high intensity muscle building cardio.

Slow does not mean you reduce the intensity; it means that you need to reduce the number of days in a week that you do this.

Trust me, high intensity muscle building cardio is not the easiest of things to do.

You will be left panting for breath, while your muscles burn and your eyes water.

But don’t give up, and in time, the fat will dissolve revealing the muscles beneath.

Basic Spa Etiquette

by Raechelle Parker

The first spa visit is a daunting experience for any newbie. Behind that excitement of having your first spa adventure lays apprehension that you may not belong there and that you might commit a huge, laughable mistake. This article will help you understand the basic dos and don’t’s regarding your conduct and behavior in a spa. This is not merely an advice borne out of mid-air, the International SPA Association and Resort Hotel Association actually has developed a Spa Code of Conduct to guide you.

Common sense and basic etiquette in a spa will serve you well. Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and avoid annoying other spa patrons by talking loudly on your phone or letting your phone ring so loudly. Ideally, you should not bring your small children into the spa. Also, as much as possible, you should not carry any jewelry to the spa.

As a spa patron, you can expect courteous treatment. You can ask the therapist or masseuse to stop the treatment if it gets too painful, or whatever reason for that matter. You can always tell the spa staff your discomforts and they can make adjustments accordingly. It is also fine to ask questions about staff training, licensing and certification. Furthermore, you should expect that any information that you disclose will be kept confidential by the spa staff.

You should also not be forced to take a massage nude. You can always ask to keep your undergarments. It is also important to know what it is that you want when you enter a spa. You should specify what gender you want your therapist to be. Female masseurs are much more in demand with female clients. For older spa goers, they already have selected spa therapists who have great skill.

Also, make sure to book ahead. If for some reason you cancel, give the spa as much of an advance notice as you can.

The Simple Instruction That Returns Sanchin Kata To Ancient Workability

by Al Case

Perhaps you have come across the old saying…’If you don’t know Sanchin, you don’t know Karate.’ It happens that this statement is fundamentally correct. It is correct because when done in the proper manner Sanchin kata results in a liberation of fighting energy beyond any form known.

The form was originally migrated to Okinawan from China, where it was part of a school called Pan Gai Noon. While PGN is no longer around, that first kata is taught in such systems as Goju Ryu and Uechi ryu. It has also been altered and taught in Shotokan based systems as the Hangetsu form.

The original form, as simple as it is, was taught over the course of years. Students would spend hours a night just walking, learning how to sink their weight, before they were shown even the most basic of hand movements. This fact, of being taught to sink the weight and stabilize the stance, should give even the dullest karate student a significant clue as to the correct way to execute the pattern.

In Uechi Ryu Sanchin, which is the first manifestation of this form beyond Pan Gai Noon, the emphasis is on developing muscular tension. Thus, the intent of the sanchin stance is translated from the creation (and sinking) of intrinsic chi energy to the creation of muscle. Muscle is nothing but a temporary convenience when compared to energy, and thus the form is diluted and made less.

In Goju ryu Sanchin the intent of the form is to develop proper breathing. Thus, the purpose of the form is to create the sensation of hard chi energy in the body, but without the emphasis on sinking the weight the reality of such energy is forsaken. At this point one can perceive that the Sanchin form has been altered until it is but a shadow of what it should be…the story gets worse, however.

In Shotokan, and like systems of classical martial arts, the actual structure of the form has been rendered into simplistic self defense techniques. Mind, there is nothing wrong with this type of martial structure, except that it has nothing to so with the generation of serious intrinsic energy. The form in these later schools is called Hangetsu.

To be done correctly. this incredible form must be returned to simple concepts, and and taught simply. One must toss out concepts of breathing and muscularity and self defense except as they are drawn along by the sheer fact of energy generation. Thus, the simple instruction, “sink the weight, and ’swirl’ the motion so that it creates a wave of energy which swirls inside the body and shoots out the arm,” is the only concept one should be working on.

Done with this easy instruct, for months and years, the generation of internal energy becomes real, and the internal energy becomes usable. Though the author would not propose combat as a solution, it must be remembered that Kanbun Uechi, the founder of Uechi ryu and a man who had studied the actual Sanchin in the manner recommended in this article, killed a man with one strike. No, don’t kill people, but do realize the true depth and power of the martial arts by practicing sanchin kata by sinking the weight and swirling the body so that energy may be developed and used.

Using Karate Techniques To Find The True Art

by Al Case

To rebuild Karate as a True Art, and this would include Shotokan, Goju, Uechi, or various other types of the art, one should always look to the techniques. The applications are the kata made real, they are concepts made to work. They are the heart of the animal that is The True Art.

The first step, in making your art work, is to make your stance work. The forms teach how to get into stances from a variety of directions and previous postures. So one should practice the movements of the kata until this concept of transitioning from stance to stance can be done without thought.

The second step, if you are going to make the karate forms real, is to make sure your limbs are in functional positions. There are many arm positions in the martial arts techniques where your limbs cannot support weight enough to make the technique work. You must examine your form and change arm positions until they become functional in real world situations.

The third step is to have proper body alignment between hand and foot. The body is a chain of muscles and bones from stance to impact, and you must make sure that every piece of the body is in the proper place. The old saying, a chain is as strong as its weakest link, comes to mind.

The fourth step if you are going to make karate moves become significant, is to work on your breathing. Breathing should be relaxed, but intent upon keeping the abdomen taut, especially upon striking, or getting struck. Breathing simply for the sake of breathing, as is done in the art of Goju Ryu Karate, must be inspected for real function, and possibly altered if you are going to have real martial arts self defense.

The fifth and final step, and ultimately the most necessary, is that you must have Coordinated Body Motion (CBM) when you use your body. You must harmonize all motion, taking into account the length and mass of every muscle and limb, and the entire torso. You must understand how this all relates to timing, and you must make your body motions utilize this harmonious timing.

One of the more fascinating facts is that martial arts fighting has very little to do with finding The True Art. As a matter of fact, fighting tends to disrupt the concentration that is necessary to put the pieces together that will resurrect your martial art. This piece of knowledge is something that the old masters knew, and not just because they were old.

Any art can be a great art, but it always requires a great sensei, and a great student. The purpose of this bit of writing has been to educate students to be their own great teachers. Ultimately, your progress is up to you, and if you understand that then it will be easy to use Karate techniques to find the True Art.

Finding That Secret Martial Arts Wudang Technique!

by Al Case

When I was young I wanted to learn secret martial arts. I wanted to know those mysterious tricks that would enable somebody smaller to smash somebody taller. I wanted to know that tae kwon do or kenpo or whatever that would enable me to really trash the bad guys.

I began my study of Kenpo, and the secrets were at my fingertips. In those whirling limbs were hidden fist martial arts, invisible dragon concepts, and down and dirty, take ‘em apart fighting secrets. I reveled in the endless forms and techniques…but I couldn’t quite figure out the secrets.

From Chinese Kenpo I switched over to classical Karate. There was a secret Karate had, I just knew it in my bones, and I performed the karate kata until my body trembled. In the end, I could grab hold the dojo mat with my feet, and throw that classical power with the best of them, but there was no real secret to it all.

After Karate I made the transition to Kung Fu, with all those styles there had to be a secret Kung Fu that would make me just really unbeatable! I threw myself into Shaolin Kung Fu and Kung Fu fighting and…I felt like a whirling dervish on speed! But, in the end, I didn’t find that secret that would make me superhuman!

Okay, not merely Shaolin, but a specialized variation of secret Shaolin! So I went on the search for Yip Man Wing Chun…I wanted to be a Wing Chun grandmaster! I began beating that wooden dummy like he was yesterday’s eggs, doing the wooden dummy training until he needed an ambulance to take him away…but…I was just working hard, there was no secret gimmick that I could use, there was no…sigh.

So, not some sort of secret Wing Chun, but maybe aderivation on secret Wudan…that had to be the method! I explored Wudan Tai Chi Chuan, searched for secret Bagwa zhang, and spiraled through the world of mystical martial arts like tracers on a battlefield. And, great stuff, I could sink my mysterious and intrinsic energy right to the earth’s center, and spin like a planet full of windmills, but…where was that secret martial arts I needed so bad?

I did everything I could. Meditations on the secret of intrinsic energy that fueled the mysterious tan tiens and enlightened the burning chakras of the greater microcosmic orbit that led to self realization in samadhi when I ascended from my skullular brainpan in the higher realms of paradaisical existence. But, and I say this with a bit of self disgust…I can’t find the secret!

I’m old now, and in great shape, gonna last a long time, and I know there is a secret out there. And I can do martial arts fighting with the best of them, slay hordes of secret ninjas if I have to, so nobody can stop me from getting to that secret martial art…if I could only find it. Please…somebody tell me…what is the secret?
